Is a Microchip enough….
In the UK you can be fined £500 if you do not have your dog micro-chipped, But is that all you need to do to stay legal??
Whilst their are many bylaws in the UK regarding dog ownership, one Law has remained unchanged for decades and that is the requirement for your dog to be easily identified.
Many people think that with the change in law, making Micro-Chipping compulsory, then there would no longer be a need for the tradition dog tag, when in fact that law has remained unchanged.
A microchip contains a unique 15 digit number that can be used by vets and authorities to identify a dogs owner via details held on a central database, as long as the details have been kept up to date by the owner.
In the UK the control of dogs act 1992 states that any dog in a public place must wear a collar and have a tag with the Name, Address (Incl Postcode) of the owner and Optionally the owners phone number. If a stray dog is found with out Identification a fine of up to £5000 can be imposed (plus any costs incurred whilst caring for the dog).
At #DoggyBeautiful we have a number of options available to make sure you stay the right side of the law, and to make sure you are reunited with your precious pet as quickly as possible.
With 99% of the population owning mobile phones we recommend a Collar with either your surname and mobile no. Or you Dogs Name and your mobile number, this is all the information a member of the public would need to arrange the safe return of your pet.
Many owners are worried that having there dogs name on the collar could make it easier for them to be stolen, but we all know that most dogs will respond to “here boy” etc. especially if a tasty treat is involved!!
In an addition (and to comply with the law) we would always recommend an additional tag with your address and phone number.
A dog warden, by law, is required to write to the owner of the stray dog to make arrangements for there return.
